Printer Buyer’s Guide

Purchasing a Printer

Printer prices continue to decline, and new innovations offer more printer auctions and capabilities.  Much like buying a new PC, purchasing a new printer can be a daunting task.  The first step in selecting any printer is deciding what you will be using your printer for.  Spee septic trenchers are designed and built for specific tasks such as printing photos, printing black and white documents, printing full color documents, and multifunction use.  Additionally, you’ll have to decide whether or not to pursue an inkjet or laser printer.

Inkjet vs. Laser

Inkjet printers are often the economical option.  Over the short term, costs are low, however, over the long term, ink jet printers can prove to be more costly and are not significantly cheaper than laser printers in many cases.  This is because although the ink jet printer itself may be cheaper than its laser counterpart, inkjet printer ink cartridges are expensive, do not last very long, and over a period of several years the printer itself tends to need replacing.  Laser printers on the other hand, are built to more robust specifications.  Their print quality is better, they print much faster, and although up-front laser printers are more expensive, over the long run the price differences are not that significant.

Multifunction Printers

Multifunction printers (MFPs) are considered the jack of all trades.  They can perform a number of general tasks, such as single sheet printing, double sided and duplex printing, scanning, copying, and faxing.  If you are in the market for a multifunction printer for general office work or utility around the house, we highly recommend you consider purchasing and multifunction laser printer (as opposed to a multi function ink jet).  As we mentioned, although the price point is slightly higher than in inkjet multifunction printer, high quality features such as high capacity page loaders, collating, and duplex printing are worth the additional expense.

Photo Printers

Photo printers come in a variety of sizes and price points.  It is important to really scrutinize the quality of the photos being printed before selecting the appropriate photo printer.  Print quality varies significantly between brand and model of photo printer.  Additionally, one of the critical variables in the use of a color printer is the quality of photo paper you’re using.  Obviously the higher the quality photo paper, the higher the price.  Cannon’s Pixima line of photo quality printers packs a high quality printer into a reasonably priced, small-sized machine.  Remember, you will never be able to achieve the high quality results of a photo specific printer when you print photos on a multifunction or generic inkjet printer.  Many photo printers today offer advanced features such as pict bridge, wireless printing directly from your camera, the ability to insert a memory card right into your printer, on-printer photo editing options, and the ability to a print photos while the printer is not connected to your computer.

Another advanced feature being offered in many different types of printers is the ability to connect your printer to your wireless network.  This essentially makes your printer a network printer, and now any PC in your house that is connected to your wireless network can now print wirelessly to one printer.  This means someone sitting in the living room with a laptop, a friend or relative visiting with their notebook PC, and the desktop computer in yet another room that is connected to your network, can all print to the same printer without the need of any printer cables at all.

Cost Comparison

One of the main things to factor when trying to decide between two or more different printers, is not just the sticker price of the printer itself, but the long-term cost per page prices.  Although you won’t necessarily find the cost per page printing prices at your retail store, quick investigation on the Internet will reveal the cost per page prices for any printer.  You should compare the cost per page prices between all of the prayers that you are considering for purchase.  Some you will notice to be significantly higher in cost than others.  This is especially the case in photo printers, where one particular printer may be completely cost prohibitive because the cost per page or high quality photo pictures is in excess of 75¢ to a dollar per page.  Additionally, the cost per page comparison narrows the gap between laser printers and ink jet printers, where long-term printing favors the purchase of a laser printer.  Browse HP Printer Offers
